What does Grace mean?

Grace, divine favour

From the Latin gratia, "favour" or "thanks", used in Christian theology for the unearned favour of God.

The story behind the name

Grace belongs to the group of virtue names that English Puritans adopted in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, alongside Faith, Hope, Prudence and Mercy. Unlike most of that group, it never became quaint.

Grace O'Malley, the sixteenth-century Irish chieftain and pirate who negotiated with Elizabeth I as an equal, is one of the more remarkable bearers. Grace Darling became a Victorian folk hero after rowing out to a shipwreck in 1838, and Grace Hopper helped invent modern computer programming.

The name has never gone away, and it returned to the top twenty in both the United States and the United Kingdom around the turn of the millennium.
