Julia is the feminine of the Roman family name Julius, whose own origin is uncertain - possibly from Iulus, the legendary son of Aeneas, or from a root meaning "downy-bearded" and hence youthful.

The story behind the name

The gens Julia claimed descent from Venus through Aeneas, a genealogy that Julius Caesar was happy to publicise. His daughter Julia married Pompey, and her death in childbirth removed one of the few restraints on the civil war that followed.

The name appears in the New Testament, was borne by early martyrs, and stayed in continuous use in Latin Europe.
